Keep your baby healthy in 10 steps

There are so many things around a baby every day that you never know which of them affects them in what way. So it is essential to take care of your lifestyle while considering your baby. Your baby’s happiness lies solely on the way you treat them and bring them up. The following precautions will become second nature to you as both of you grow together.

1. Breastfeeding is essential for your baby
The American Academy of Pediatrics considers breast milk an ideal source of nutrition and protection for babies throughout the first year of life. Breast milk is the best source of nutrition for your baby because it’s easy to digest, helps protect against food allergies and gives her protective antibodies to help fight off illness.

Breastfeeding is one of the main ways to keep your baby healthy.

2. Update your baby’s immunisation
Take your baby for regular checkups and make sure her immunisations stay on schedule.

3. Wash your hands
You may use friction, running water, and soap for at least 20 seconds for it to be effective. Ask other people to wash their hands before touching, feeding, or holding your baby.

Washing hands contributes to hygiene around a baby.

4. Limit your baby’s exposure to illness
If someone is ill, discourage that person from touching your baby or her toys. When going out, the less crowded and more ventilated space, the healthier it will be.

5. Cover surfaces
Make sure to place a changing pad, blanket, or towel between your baby and a public surface such as a high chair or changing table. After use, tie it up in a plastic bag to prevent it from contaminating other items. If you need to use the pad again before washing, be sure you remember which side stays next to your baby.

6. Carry hand sanitiser
When hand-washing isn’t an option, use an alcohol-based sanitizer. Remember to sanitise after touching public places/ services such as ATMs, escalator handrails, shopping carts, and after signing credit card slips. Hand sanitiser isn’t recommended for babies.

7. Tote disinfectant wipes
If any of your baby’s toys, pacifiers, or bottles drop onto the floor, wipe the object off and disinfect them. At public places like restaurants use the wipes to clean the table or high chair before eating. Make sure to use baby safe wipes.

8. Stay away from smoky places
A smoker inhales minority part of smoke from a cigarette, but the majority of it becomes secondhand smoke. If people next to you are smoking, simply move. There is no such thing as a safe level of exposure for your baby.

9. Avoid direct sunlight
The sun is most intense from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. When it’s warm and sunny, dress your baby in lightweight long sleeves and pants, a large-brimmed hat, and/or sunglasses with sun protection.

10. Don’t overdress your baby
When the weather is cool, dress your baby in one more layer of clothing than you would wear. Babies lose a lof heat through their heads, so be sure to remember a hat.

Dress your baby in a way that doesn’t hinder their breathing, with their nose and mouth uncovered.

While your baby is all over your world, knowing beforehand simple tips to keep her happy helps you in the process. So that while she grows up smiling, you enjoy your motherhood to the fullest.
