Healthy Pregnancy: National Nutrition week

National nutrition week is celebrated every year from 1st to 7th of September. This week, we emphasize the importance of a balanced diet and correct nutrition. The human body is fully dependent on food intake for its energy and that energy comes in the form of nutrients. Now, whenever there is a decline in any of these nutrients, your body starts to suffer from various disorders. Maintaining a nutritious diet is very important to stay healthy. The purpose of the National Nutrition Week is to promote nutritional awareness among the people of society to create a healthy India.

Nutrition becomes even more important when you are pregnant. In these 9 months, you have to maintain a healthy diet that fulfills the nutritional requirement of both, you and your growing baby. Eating a balanced diet is necessary for pregnant women because whatever you eat, contributes to the nourishment and growth of your healthy baby. Having essential minerals and vitamins will lead to the proper development of your baby through the trimesters.

Some of the essential nutrients for pregnant women are:

  • Iron:

    Iron is essential as it helps to deliver oxygen to the baby. Some of the rich sources of iron are peas and iron-fortified cereals.
  • Calcium:

    Calcium is very important to build strong bones and teeth. Dairy products like cheese, milk, and yogurt are a great source of calcium.
  • Vitamin B6:

    Vitamin B6 assists your body to use fat and carbohydrates properly allowing you to maintain your weight. B6 is found in vegetables, bananas, and whole-grain cereals 
  • Folate:

    Folate enhances the production of proteins and blood in the fetus. Folate can be found in green vegetables and legumes.
  • Vitamin D:

    Vitamin D enhances calcium absorption by the body and helps in the development of healthy bones and teeth. Most of the body’s requirement is fulfilled by sitting in the sunlight. 
  • Proteins:

    Proteins are the building blocks for a baby’s body. They largely affect brain growth and tissue development. Therefore, a pregnant woman is recommended to consume at least 60-100 grams of protein per day. Beans, cheese, milk, and nuts are some protein-rich diets.
