Fit India Movement – How does it concern you?

India celebrates the National Sports Day on the 29th of August every year in the memory of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand’s birth anniversary. Yet, it is not just our national sport that is celebrated and honoured on this day. India is home to as diverse a sphere of sports as it is to diverse people. Be it our love for Virat Kohli playing cricket, Saina Nehwal’s badminton career, Dutee Chand’s speed or Mary Kom’s record-breaking boxing, this country has always adored and participated in all sorts of sports.

Recently, a lot of our impressive sportswomen have brought glory to not just their sport and country, but also to other women who take on such incredible feats in their lives. Hima Das, Vinesh Phogat, Apurvi Chandela, P.V. Sindhu and many many more are the shining ladies who have shown their mettle not just here, but to the whole world.

Some of these amazing women have picked up their sport again, after becoming mothers. I am sure we all remember the inspiring life-story of Mary Kom in the Priyanka Chopra starer movie. She may have taken a 2 year hiatus during pregnancy, but in no way left boxing behind. Rather, she came back stronger and was then dubbed “Magnificent Mary” by the Amateur International Boxing Association. Whether it is Sania Mirza’s Instagram posts with her baby or paralympic athlete Deepa Malik’s amazing achievements at this stage in her life, motherhood and sports may seem an odd combination but they truly are not.

Those of you who have a baby on the way should know that sports during pregnancy can be a good thing despite some of the pregnancy myths that you might have heard. In fact, some physical activity and exercise during pregnancy and after are highly recommended by the doctors too. You will get more active, have better sleep, be relieved of stress and have your body in a better state with this.

So on the occasion of National Sports Day 2019, make sure that you take in the importance of sports and fitness in life. And with the launch of Fit India campaign by PM Modi, it is truly high time for doing some physical activity daily, if you have not been doing so already. You don’t need to do something big like these athletes, you can start small, even by walking around 3000 steps daily. Sports during pregnancy will not only lead to a healthy pregnancy but will also make your life ahead better as they become a habit you shouldn’t let go of. So ready, get set and go Mama!
